Zhi-zhang Xu (Chih-Chang Hsu), is a graduate of Shanghai Medical University and is presently Professor and Director, Division of Diagnostic Ultrasound ZhongShan Hospital, Shanghai Medical University. Xu is widely recognized as a pioneer of ultrasound in China and he received the Pioneer Award by the World Federation of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine in October 1988.
He worked in the early 1960s with the Shanghai Ultrasound Research Group lead by Dr. An Shih. In collaboration with the group he published in 1961 "Ultrasonic Diagnostics" in the Shang Sci Tech Press. This was followed by the pioneering report: "Use of pulsed Ultrasound in clinical diagnosis" which appeared in the English edition of the Chinese Medical Journal in 1962. In the same year he reported continuous wave doppler findings in arteritis, phebitis, aneurysm and stenosis and M-mode diagnosis of mitral valvular disease. In 1964 he published a series of papers in early echo-cardiography in the Acta Academiae Medicinae Primae shanghai: I. Experimental Observations on cardiac echo waves., II. The use of A-scope Ultrasound Apparatus in the diagnosis of heart diseases. Together with engineer Jing-Zou Liu he was responsible for building one of the earliest compound contact B-scanner in Shanghai.
Professor Xu is presently Vice-President of the Chinese Association of Medical Imaging Technology (CAMIT); President of the Society of Ultrasound in medicine of Chinese Medical Association (SUM-CDMA), a Senior Member of the Chinese Institute of Electronics (CIE), Vice-President of the Shanghai Bio-medical Engineering Society and Vice-President of the Shanghai Acoustic Society. He works on the Education Advisory Council of the Jefferson Ultrasound Research and Education Institute (JUREI). The "Zhongshan-Jefferson" Diagnostic Ultrasound Training Center was founded on June 10, 1996 by the Jefferson Ultrasound Research and Education Institute, in collaboration with Xu and his department, for the advancement of ultrasound education in China. The ultrasound training Center is located in Zhongshan Hospital, Shanghai Medical University.
Professor Xu has published more than 50 papers and has received numerous awards from national and international societies, including the Advanced Scientific-Technological Award by the Public Health Ministry of the People’s Republic of China in 1992.
